Dutch Nationality: Proposed changes cancelled

The proposal to amend the Dutch Nationality Act 2003 to sharpen the criteria for granting and obtaining Dutch nationality is withdrawn. The government has announced this on 27 November 2012. This implies that the current Act will stay as it is for now.

This means for example that foreign spouses of Dutch nationals, who acquire the Dutch nationality do not have to renounce their current nationality under Dutch law.

The proposed amendments were the introduction of income criteria, qualification requirement (at least two years of work experience in the Netherlands or at least two years of vocational qualification in the Netherlands), renunciation of the current nationality in almost all cases and abolishment of the possibility to obtain Dutch citizenship for spouses of Dutch citizens living abroad.
